چکیده
Air pollution is a severe environmental problem in the Indian subcontinent. Largely caused by rapid growth of population, industrialization, and urbanization, air can adversely affect human health environment. To mitigate such adverse impacts, government launched National Clean Programme (NCAP) January 2019. Meanwhile, unexpected city-lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic March 2020 India greatly reduced activities thus anthropogenic emissions gaseous aerosol pollutants. The NCAP lockdown could provide an ideal field experiment for quantifying extent which various levels activity reduction impact quality Here, we study improvement subcontinent employing multiple satellite products surface observations. Satellite data shows significant reductions nitrogen dioxide (NO2) 17% optical depth (AOD) 20% during with reference mean between 2005–2019. No persistent NO2 nor AOD detectable period (2019). Surface observations show consistent PM2.5 seven cities across subcontinent, except Mumbai Central India. increase relative humidity decrease planetary boundary layer also play important role influencing lockdown. With aerosols lockdown, net radiation fluxes positive anomalies at negative top atmosphere over most parts results this valuable information policymakers South Asia adjust scientific measures proposed efficient mitigation.
